AI doesn’t replace humans. AI just makes humans better.
Too many people are poisoned by negative images of AI in the form of humanoid robots that go rogue and decide to take over the world. This, however, is FAR from the reality!
Let’s start with a few facts:
- AI doesn’t often look humanoid. In fact, it often doesn’t even have a physical “body”!
- It’s 100% under programmers’ control.
- And it’s NOT being used (by anyone!) to take over the world and overturn the human race. In fact, used correctly, AI can manifestly improve the condition of humanity.
Optimally, AI is an aide to humans, not a replacement. AI can help all of us to perform tasks better and more efficiently. And there will likely come a day when we, humankind, can’t understand how we used to live without AI’s assistance. Just like some of us, in 2020, struggle to imagine a world without the internet or cell phones. Or, to take it back further, we can’t imagine life without farming; without being able to grow our own food. But farming, like AI, was – many years ago – a technological advancement.
“But,” some people are surely saying, “AI will take over humans’ jobs!” Let’s go back to the comparison of AI being to modern people like farming was to hunter-gatherers. “But if you can grow your own food,” the hunter-gatherers might have said, “then what’s the use of all the skills I learned foraging?” The answer to the hunter-gatherers is that teir knowledge is useful to instruct the farmers – on which crops to raise, which traits to select, and what to avoid. Ready to train a new generation ready to till the land.
AI is similar to this. People who work jobs now will have to move into more managerial roles, to oversee automation. But their input will far from cease to be critical. And then, as things are more automated, humans’ role in the process will change – just as it did when we moved into a farming society, and then again, more recently, when we moved into mechanised and industrial farming.
There’s no need to be afraid of AI. AI is already being used by some of the world’s biggest companies, to help with things from deciding who will make the best employee for a particular job, to, in the case of McDonald’s, predicting your order! AI is the future, and we’re only slowing down a huge leap toward humanity’s progress if we resist.
